Lake Vermilion, Minnesota: August 2003

This Was One for the Record Books

This trip had it all.  Well, everything but fish I suppose.  We had outboard issues, fished with a foul-mouthed pro in a boat that went 80mph, sat outside in our underwear to get a tan, drove 23 hours straight .... twice (thank you RedBull), and tried to convince our grandfather to wear spandex biking shorts.  Oh, and the motorhome sprang two leaks; one in the gas tank and the other in the sewage tank.  Not really sure which one of those was worse.  And the cherry on top?  One of the front wheels almost fell off while driving down the Ohio turnpike.  I wouldn't trade any of it for all the oil in Texas!

When the fishing is slow .... things get weird

So poor Mike got coaxed into this trip through promises of monster pike and 10 pound walleye.  Well, I think he did catch his first pike, but it wasn't a monster and I'm pretty sure there were no walleye over 10 inches caught all week.  But, he did get a sunburn and some memories that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

And for some reason that I'll never understand, Mike has been a faithful participant in just about every fishing excursion for almost ten years since Vermilion.  I still think he is hunting for that monster pike.

They say the muskie is the fish of 10 thousand casts. Josh only needed one. This is the only musky any of us has ever caught.

Yes, that actually is a stream of pee running down the parking lot
